Dear Friends and Neighbors,

Thank you for coming by to help give comfort and kindness in New York City this Valentine’s Day.

Inspired by the “community fridges” we’ve seen pop up around the city these past months, we, the Bombas Giving Team, wanted to spread the giving love by making it fun and easy for you to give, too.

For today, we chose socks and flowers because socks are the #1 most requested and least donated clothing item among folks experiencing homelessness, and flowers, because well, we could all use a little something to brighten up our day.

We love giving with you,

The Bombas Giving Team

Here are some tips on how to give:

1. Kindly approach an individual who is asking for some extra support.

2. Say hello and meet at eye level if possible. Let the individual know what you're offering.

3. Allow the person to accept or decline your offer. The dignity of choice is powerful.

4. If it feels right, introduce yourself and ask for their name as well. The experience of homelessness can lead to feelings of detachment and anonymity. Hearing one’s own name can offer a reaffirming connection to one’s sense of self.

5. If time permits allow a few minutes for conversation. We’re all feeling a little isolated these days, and some friendly human connection makes us all feel good.

6. Learn more about the realities and complexities of homelessness by checking out these commonly asked questions with answers.

Want to keep giving? Check in on your unhoused neighbors. Offer words of kindness to folks you pass who are asking for a bit of support. Or organize a coordinated giving effort with friends by meeting up at a distance to give out cold weather clothing items like new or newly washed hats, gloves, jackets, new masks, hand warmers, gift cards, or hot beverages.
