How To Tie DIY

Turn comfy Bombas into colorful Bombas at home with Rit dye.

Bombas x Rit

In collaboration with Rit dye, we’ve made a DIY collection designed for you to turn comfy, plain white Bombas socks and tees into colorful homemade masterpieces. When you buy one of these kits, you're helping us donate 4,000 of them to organizations providing family-friendly summer programming for those in need in the communities of Chicago and NYC, like the Children’s Museum of Manhattan.

Steps On How To DIY

Prepare Your Fabric

1. Prewash fabric in warm, soapy water to remove any finishes that may interfere with dye absorption.

2. Lay fabric out on a flat surface.

Prepare Your Bottles

1. Add your chosen powder dye(s) into each squeeze bottle (use our handy color guide below to mix up the perfect shades).

2. Fill the rest of the bottle with water.

3. Add one teaspoon of salt.

4. Shake well. Now you're ready to tie dye!

Choose A Tie Dye Technique

Swirl

1. Decide where you want the center of the spiral to be. Then position your fingers around the center point and slowly begin to twist fabric in a spiral direction.

2. Loosely wrap rubber bands around fabric to hold spiral together.

3. Place on a wire rack over a tray or sink and apply squeeze bottle dye(s) in sections. Flip over and repeat.

Scrunch

1. Scrunch random sections of fabric and secure them with rubber bands.

2. Place on a wire rack and apply your dyes. Flip over and repeat.

Rainbow

1. Pleat and fold fabric back and forth on a diagonal and tightly secure with rubber bands.

2. Place on a wire rack over a tray or sink and apply squeeze bottle dye(s) to create a rainbow. Flip over and repeat.

Ice Dye

1. Loosely scrunch the fabric and place on a wire rack over a tray or sink.

2. Cover with ice.

3. Sprinkle powder dyes over ice and allow the ice to melt completely through.

After Dyeing

1. Once you're done applying the dyes, allow the fabric to sit and absorb the dye for 30 minutes.

2. Place your freshly dyed piece in the microwaveable tray to heat set for two minutes. Heat opens up in the fibers in the fabric to allow for maximum dye absorption. You can also place it in the sun for 3 hours, or use a blow dryer on each side of the fabric for 5 minutes each.

3. After heat setting, let the fabric cool for 5 minutes.

4. Rinse it in cool water until rinse water runs clear.

5. Carefully remove any rubber bands and unfold the fabric.

6. Wash in cold water with a mild detergent, rinse and dry. If multiple items were dyed, give each item a separate first wash.

*PSA: Avoid dyeing heat-sensitive fibers, such as rayon, wool and very sheer nylon. Never microwave anything containing metal, such as zippers, snaps and studs.
